SPECIAL JUBILEE YEAR OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

Our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, has declared a special year of Saint Francis to commemorate the 800th anniversary of his death. In a decree issued by the Apostolic Penitentiary of the Holy See, this special Jubilee time of grace officially began on January 10, 2026, and will end on January 10, 2027.

For the Jubilee Year of Saint Francis, I am pleased to officially designate in our diocese, Saint Francis of Assisi in Orem, as an official pilgrim Church for this special Year of Grace. A Plenary Indulgence for this Jubilee year may be granted under the usual conditions of sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion, and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father. This includes praying the Our Father and the Creed, along with invocations for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Clare, and all the saints of the Franciscan Family.

Plenary Indulgence is available to all the faithful who, with a spirit detached from sin, follow the conditions named above and make a pilgrimage to any Franciscan conventual church or place or worship anywhere in the world named after Saint Francis of Assisi.

The decree includes a stipulation to those who cannot travel: the elderly, the sick and their caregivers, and all who for serious reasons are unable to leave their homes – can obtain the Plenary Indulgence by fulfilling the same conditions as they are able, these are, to offer their sufferings and pain to our Merciful God, and join spiritually the Jubilee celebrations. In this way, no one is excluded from the grace of the holy year for the Lord draws near to all who seek Him with humble and faithful hearts. The indulgence may be offered for the souls of our loved ones in Purgatory, entrusting them in God's mercy and compassion.

CONSECRATION OF OUR NATION TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS

Simultaneously, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has called us to prepare our hearts for the consecration of our nation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 12, 2026 (Solemnity of the Sacred Heart) in conjunction to America's Semi-quincentennial, that is, the Two Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The two initiatives of the US Bishops to celebrate the Special Jubilee of St. Francis and consecrate the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus give us another opportunity to grow in grace and holiness, and new pathways to carry forward our witness and participation in the recent Jubilee Year of Hope by growing in mercy and compassion, and as instruments of peace in our communities and in our world. A sincere thank you to all who participated in the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope with prayers and pilgrimages.

I ask the people of God in Utah to join in this special Jubilee as a way to discover or rediscover the Franciscan message of peace, reconciliation, conversion of heart, and evangelical witness for a world marked by conflict and division.

2026 LENTEN SEASON – "Dilexit Te" (I Have Loved You, Rev. 3:9)

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the solemn season of Lent, a time to turn our hearts and minds toward the Paschal Mystery—Christ's passion, death, and resurrection. It is a time to fix our attention more fully on God. The Ash Wednesday exhortation, "Turn away from sin and believe in the Gospel," reminds us both of our need for God's mercy and of His invitation to reconciliation through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. As we receive ashes with the words, "Remember you are dust and unto dust you will return," we are confronted with our mortality and the urgency of genuine conversion and renewed discipleship.

On February 18, 2026, we begin forty days of spiritual renewal, examining our lives, our relationship with God, and the ways sin has wounded our communion with one another. This sacred season invites us to respond to the Lord's call to penance, repentance, and conversion. I encourage all the faithful of our diocese to reflect on Pope Leo XIV's first Apostolic Exhortation, Dilexit Te ("I Have Loved You," cf. Rev 3:9), as a guide for our Lenten journey. He teaches that "the poor are at the heart of the Church," and our Lenten disciplines should deepen our awareness of Christ's suffering for our sins and the suffering of our brothers and sisters. Christ extends His love to all—the good and the bad, the rich and the poor. Our Holy Father reminds us that Christ's love is made visible in His closeness to the poor, and that authentic love of God is inseparable from love of neighbor, especially those who suffer in body and spirit.

The late Pope Francis likewise urged us to recognize Christ in those who need care, compassion, and mercy. He challenged us to look beyond ourselves, to share in the pain of those who are marginalized, and to make our parishes "islands of mercy in a sea of indifference." Lent is a sacred time to purify our hearts, renew our faith, and focus on the good of others. We are called to see Christ in those deprived of dignity and love, and to build parish and mission communities rooted in prayer, penance, and charity. Through this renewal, we open ourselves more fully to God's transforming grace.

In addition to prayer and fasting, I urge you to put faith into action through concrete acts of charity. Foster solidarity by helping others understand the realities of global poverty, inequality, and the systems that diminish the dignity of every human person. Here are some recommended practices.

AÑO JUBILAR ESPECIAL DE SAN FRANCISCO DE ASÍS

Nuestro Santo Padre, el Papa León XIV, ha declarado un año especial de San Francisco para conmemorar el Octavo Centenario de su muerte. En un decreto emitido por la Penitenciaría Apostólica de la Santa Sede, este tiempo especial de gracia jubilar comenzó oficialmente el 10 de enero de 2026 y concluirá el 10 de enero de 2027. Para el Año Jubilar de San Francisco, me complace designar oficialmente en nuestra diócesis a la Parroquia San Francisco de Asís en Orem como iglesia de peregrinación para este año especial de gracia.

Una Indulgencia Plenaria para este año jubilar puede obtenerse bajo las condiciones habituales de confesión sacramental, comunión eucarística y oración por las intenciones del Santo Padre. Esto incluye rezar el Padrenuestro y el Credo, junto con invocaciones pidiendo la intercesión de la Santísima Virgen María, San Francisco de Asís, Santa Clara y todos los santos de la Familia Franciscana.

La Indulgencia Plenaria está disponible para todos los fieles que, con un espíritu desprendido del pecado, cumplan las condiciones mencionadas y hagan una peregrinación a cualquier iglesia, convento o lugar franciscano en el mundo dedicado a San Francisco de Asís.

El decreto incluye una disposición para quienes no pueden viajar: los ancianos, los enfermos y quienes los cuidan, y todos los que por razones graves no puedan salir de sus hogares, podrán obtener la Indulgencia Plenaria cumpliendo en la medida de lo posible las mismas condiciones, ofreciendo sus sufrimientos y dolores a nuestro Dios Misericordioso y uniéndose espiritualmente a las celebraciones jubilares. De esta manera, nadie queda excluido de la gracia del año santo, pues el Señor se acerca a

todos los que lo buscan con corazón humilde y fiel. La indulgencia puede ofrecerse por las almas de nuestros seres queridos en el Purgatorio, confiándolos a la misericordia y compasión de Dios.

CONSAGRACIÓN DE NUESTRA NACIÓN AL SAGRADO CORAZÓN DE JESÚS

Simultáneamente, la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos nos ha llamado a preparar nuestros corazones para la consagración de nuestra nación al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús el 12 de junio de 2026 (Solemnidad del Sagrado Corazón) en conjunto con el Semiquincentenario de los Estados Unidos, es decir, el Doscientos Cincuenta Aniversario de la firma de la Declaración de Independencia.

Las dos iniciativas de los Obispos estadounidenses—celebrar el Jubileo Especial de San Francisco y consagrar los Estados Unidos al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús—nos ofrecen otra oportunidad para crecer en gracia y santidad, y nuevos caminos para continuar nuestro testimonio y participación en el reciente Jubileo de la Esperanza, creciendo en misericordia y compasión, y siendo instrumentos de paz en nuestras comunidades y en nuestro mundo. Mi más sincero agradecimiento a todos los que participaron en el Jubileo de la Esperanza 2025 con oraciones y peregrinaciones.

Pido al Pueblo de Dios en Utah que se una a este Jubileo especial como un modo de descubrir o redescubrir el mensaje franciscano de paz, reconciliación, conversión del corazón y testimonio evangélico en un mundo marcado por el conflicto y la división.

TEMPORADA DE CUARESMA 2026 – "Dilexit Te" (Te He Amado, Apoc. 3,9)

El Miércoles de Ceniza marca el comienzo del tiempo solemne de la Cuaresma, un período para volver nuestro corazón y nuestra mente hacia el Misterio Pascual: la pasión, muerte y resurrección de Cristo. Es un tiempo para fijar nuestra atención más plenamente en Dios. La exhortación del Miércoles de Ceniza, "Conviértete y cree en el Evangelio", nos recuerda tanto nuestra necesidad de la misericordia de Dios como Su invitación a la reconciliación mediante la oración, el ayuno y la limosna. Al recibir las cenizas con las palabras: "Recuerda que eres polvo y al polvo volverás", somos confrontados con nuestra mortalidad y la urgencia de una conversión auténtica y un discipulado renovado.

El 18 de febrero de 2026 comenzamos cuarenta días de renovación espiritual, examinando nuestras vidas, nuestra relación con Dios y las maneras en que el pecado ha herido nuestra comunión unos con otros. Este tiempo sagrado nos invita a responder al llamado del Señor a la penitencia, al arrepentimiento y a la conversión.

Exhorto a todos los fieles de nuestra diócesis a reflexionar sobre la primera Exhortación Apostólica del Papa León XIV, Dilexit Te ("Te He Amado", cf. Ap. 3,9), como una guía para nuestro camino cuaresmal. Él enseña que "los pobres están en el corazón de la Iglesia", y nuestras disciplinas cuaresmales deben profundizar nuestra conciencia del sufrimiento de Cristo por nuestros pecados y del sufrimiento de nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Cristo extiende Su amor a todos —los buenos y los malos, los ricos y los pobres. Nuestro Santo Padre nos recuerda que el amor de Cristo se hace visible en Su cercanía a los pobres, y que el auténtico amor a Dios es inseparable del amor al prójimo, especialmente de aquellos que sufren en cuerpo y espíritu.

El difunto Papa Francisco también nos instó a reconocer a Cristo en quienes necesitan cuidado, compasión y misericordia. Nos desafió a mirar más allá de nosotros mismos, a compartir el dolor de los marginados y a convertir nuestras parroquias en "islas de misericordia en un mar de indiferencia". La Cuaresma es un tiempo sagrado para purificar nuestro corazón, renovar nuestra fe y centrarnos en el bien de los demás. Estamos llamados a ver a Cristo en aquellos privados de dignidad y amor, y a construir comunidades parroquiales y de misión arraigadas en la oración, la penitencia y la caridad. A través de esta renovación, nos abrimos más plenamente a la gracia transformadora de Dios.

Además de la oración y el ayuno, los exhorto a poner la fe en acción mediante obras concretas de caridad. Fomenten la solidaridad ayudando a otros a comprender las realidades de la pobreza global, la desigualdad y los sistemas que disminuyen la dignidad de toda persona humana.
