Brief Story of San Rafael Mission, Huntington, Utah
The history of San Rafael Catholic Mission in Huntington, Utah, is rooted in the efforts of Catholic communities and clergy to establish a place of worship and ministry in the region. Catholic presence in the area began in the 1970s when local Catholics started gathering for religious services. Initially, priests from Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish in Price visited Huntington monthly to celebrate Mass, offer sacraments, and provide religious education for both adults and children.
As the Catholic population in Huntington grew, it became clear that a dedicated space for worship was needed. Under the leadership of Father Louis A. Fischer, pastor of Notre Dame de Lourdes from 1972 to 1979, a three-acre parcel of land was purchased from the Charles Force family in 1977. Located two miles south of Huntington along Highway 10, the land became the site of a new church building for the mission. On November 7, 1977, construction officially began, with Mick Schmitz, a contractor from Carbonville, overseeing the project.
The church of San Rafael Mission was completed in time for its first Mass, celebrated on Easter Sunday in 1978. The mission continued to grow in its ministry with the addition of Deacon Deane Foote, who, along with his wife Peggy, played a key role in administering the mission and religious education classes for over 17 years. During this time, additional structures were added to the mission complex to accommodate religious education needs.
By the mid-1980s, the mission served about fifty Catholic families, many of whom were employed in the local power plants. However, the Catholic community in the area began to decline in subsequent years, with only fifteen families remaining by the 2000s. Despite this, the mission remained active, with Father Hope, the pastor of Notre Dame de Lourdes, regularly visiting to celebrate Mass for 30-35 parishioners each week.
In the early 2000s, the mission faced a significant challenge when miners from the family-owned Co-Op Mines in Huntington went on strike in 2003 to seek unionization. The strike led to mass firings, unemployment, and distress for many families in the mission. Father Hope rallied support from Catholics in Price, Huntington, and even Salt Lake City to provide financial assistance to the struggling families. Through mediation, jobs were eventually reinstated in 2004, although unionization efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.
The mission of San Rafael continues to serve as a spiritual home for the Catholic community in Huntington, upholding its tradition of faith, dedication, and resilience.
